Promoter Eddie Hearn does not see Gennady Golovkin losing to Canelo Alvarez. After all, his own fighter couldn't beat him.
Hearn spoke to Fight Hub TV and said he doesn’t see Canelo carrying the necessary power to take down the undefeated middleweight king.
"I don't think [Canelo's] strong enough," Hearn said. "I don't see many beating Golovkin at middleweight. I think Alvarez is a fantastic fighter, and I watched him back against Liam Smith who, I know you guys don't really know a lot about Liam Smith but he's a good fighter but he's not elite world level but...Canelo is a great fighter.”
Kell Brook, a fighter who’s being promoted by Hearn fought Golovkin back in 2016, but lost via fifth-round stoppage. Brook also had a broken orbital bone in the fight, but has since recovered from the injury and is defending his IBF welterweight title against Errol Spence on May 27. Hearn said Brook could have gone toe-to-toe with Golovkin for far longer had it not been for his injury.
"I think he was fantastic," Hearn said. "I thought if he didn't break his eye socket that fight would've gone deep, maybe points. I'm not saying he would've won but I think it would've been a different fight and we always knew he could do that. He was at a disadvantage in size but we knew the disadvantage wouldn't be that much but GGG's a beast - he cuts you off...I said to Kell the other day 'how hard does GGG punch?' and he went 'Pffft' as if to say 'hard.'"
Golovkin is defending The Ring, the WBA "super", WBC, IBF, IBO and the vacant lineal middleweight titles will be on the line in the September 16 mega fight against Canelo.
