Gunther: I Never Chased WWE, I Feel Like That Really Helped Me

Gunther never chased WWE.

In the past, ‘The Ring General’ has been open about his lack of desire to be in WWE before signing with the company, often noting that he prioritizes the in-ring aspect of things over entertainment and spectacle.

Speaking with The Undertaker and Michelle McCool on the latest episode of Six Feet Under, Gunther opened up about the subject again, saying that it helped his authenticity as a performer.

“I feel like what helped me as well was I never — I sound a bit arrogant but I never chased this place, I never chased WWE. It was never, I gotta work up cause I want to get there. I only focused on what I want to be and tried to be as good as possible at that. For a long time, I didn’t see myself succeeding, it would never happen maybe. I feel like it really helped me that I didn’t chase it and when I was here, I was myself and that’s what they wanted.”

Gunther continued on and said that some wrestlers will water down their style or true identity in an attempt to get to WWE.

“I feel like the best wrestlers in history are guys with edges if that makes sense. Not those polished guys, guys that don’t make everybody happy and sometimes they’ve got edges and they collide. Obviously, when there’s the big goal in WWE and a lot of guys try and get there, that’s where they kind of adapt away from what they idealistically think who they should be. When we get ourselves here, I’m in the situation too, I’m not like I do what I want, there’s a goal that the company has and you follow that when you work for a company. But, what you can bring and that confidence that you have in yourself — you gain that before you come here, I feel like that’s the best situation.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Gunther talked about his outlook on wrestling accolades. Check out his full comments here.
