Rob Van Dam: As Soon As I Was ECW RVD, I Felt Like A Superhero

Rob Van Dam says he felt like a superhero when he was in ECW.

Throughout his time as an active professional wrestler, Rob Van Dam was perhaps never hotter than when he was set to challenge John Cena for the WWE Championship at ECW One Night Stand in 2006. With the ECW audience backing him, Rob would successfully cash in Money In The Bank to win the WWE title.

While speaking to Talk to The Mike at Ottawa Comic Con, Rob Van Dam was asked about what was his most meaningful match of his career, with Rob noting that once he was ECW RVD, he felt like a superhero.

“Well, the one that stands out from my whole career is the match that I had with John Cena at One Night Stand, and the reason that it stands out isn’t just because I beat John Cena and became the WWE Champion, which is the pinnacle of the business. But for me, what really makes it memorable is that everything I put in to get to that point, I helped bring ECW back. I had Vince McMahon, I had his ear, talked him into doing this pay-per-view, letting us go. The passion in me never left ECW. As soon as I was ECW RVD, I felt like a superhero, and then when I’m WWE, it just felt like I was representing something different, a different style. So I was very happy to do that. My entire career up until that match was the build-up for it. That’s why it’s so memorable because I stuck to my guns. I’m a nonconformist at heart and and so I did everything my way. Still ended up at the top.”

Elsewhere in another recent interview, Rob noted that there were plans to face off with Cena this year. You can read more about that here.
