Matt Cardona Wants GCW To Be The Number Three Promotion Like ECW Was In The ’90s
Matt Cardona wants to see GCW continue to grow.
Matt Cardona has been a fixture of GCW since his release from WWE in 2021. What was supposed to be a short-term, three-appearance deal has turned into Cardona calling GCW a home promotion. While he will always represent a style of wrestling antithetical to what GCW presents, he is dedicated to helping the promotion and wrestling overall grow.
In a new YouTube video, which goes behind the scenes of GCW Homecoming 2025, Matt Cardona presented his own version of WWE Unreal, speaking passionately about his desire for GCW to be the tertiary alternative to WWE and AEW, similar to what ECW was to WWE and WCW in the 1990s.
“Brett Lauderdale and I have had our disagreements. We’ve butted heads, and I feel like we have the same vision, the same goal, right? It’s to grow GCW. I want to grow GCW. I want GCW to be like how ECW was considered the number three. I talk to Brett probably every single day. You know, whether it be storyline ideas for me or for other people, because there’s other people I see on this roster who I want to fucking elevate. Check my win-loss record, right? I lose all the time. I’m trying to leave the indies better than I found it. But at the same time, I’m not trying to give back. I’m not trying to pass a torch. I’m trying to light a new torch for myself. But at the same time, if I can do good for the business, for the independents, for GCW, for wrestling, sure I’ll do it. I’m very proud to be a part of GCW.”
