Benny Safdie Knew The Rock ‘Could Destroy’ The Role Of Mark Kerr After Meeting With Him In 2019

Benny Safdie knew that The Rock was perfect for the role of Mark Kerr.

Fans will get a new look at The Rock’s acting chops in ‘The Smashing Machine’, which will finally hit theaters on Friday, October 3. The film’s long production journey began back in 2019 when Seven Bucks Productions acquired the rights for a Mark Kerr biopic.

Speaking with Ariel Helwani on the latest episode of The Ariel Helwani Show, director Benny Safdie revealed that he was not attached to the project in 2019 but knew that Rock could destroy the role after meeting with him.

“At that point, I was not. I think Dwayne, he knew at that point that he wanted to tell Mark’s story. I met him pretty quickly after that and instantly, I was just like, I love this. I made a documentary with my brother, Lenny Cooke, a sports figure in 2001 when this documentary was made. Then there was another documentary I was involved in called Telemarketers which was the same time period. I really felt like I understood this part and time and I wanted to go back there. I remember talking to Dwayne in 2019 and really realizing that I know he could destroy this role.“

Alongside The Rock, ‘The Smashing Machine’ also stars names like Emily Blunt, Ryan Bader, and Lyndsey Gavin.
