Rossy Ogawa States That It Costs Money To Bring WWE Talent To Marigold

Ogawa chats IYO’s return to Marigold.

For the second consecutive year, WWE’s IYO SKY is set to be in action for Dream Star Fighting Marigold. She’ll be taking on Mayu Iwatani at the promotion’s ‘Grand Destiny’ show on October 26th. The last time they shared a ring was in 2018 for the STARDOM promotion.

Ahead of the event, Marigold founder Rossy Ogawa spoke to Proresu-TODAY and shared that it was IYO’s idea to face Iwatani. After IYO competed at Marigold’s 2024 event, she and Ogawa chatted at an afterparty, and he asked her to name someone she would like to face if she were to return, and she named Mayu.

“Yes,” Ogawa confirmed it was IYO SKY’s idea to have a match with Mayu Iwatani. “After Ryogoku last year, we had a wrap-up party at a chanko restaurant. IYO came too. When I asked her, ‘If we were to do it again next year, who would you want to do it with?’ She said, ‘Mayu, of course.'”

Ogawa went on to state that although Marigold is one of the few promotions that can bring in WWE talent, he does not do it year-round because it costs money to do so.

“Well, when you’re putting on a show at a huge venue like Ryogoku, it just has to feel special, right? In that sense, we needed more than just our regular Marigold roster; we needed guests. And, oddly enough, we’re one of the few promotions that can actually bring in WWE talent.

That said, we don’t invite them all year round, as it does cost a fair amount of money. So, the main thing was, among the matches I wanted to see happen, Mayu Iwatani versus IYO SKY already has that history between them. I wanted fans to see them continue that legacy. It’s been seven and a half years since their last match, and their positions now are different too. So just imagining what kind of match it will be when these two, who have grown so much, face each other again after all this time… it’s exciting, right?”

Before Marigold Grand Destiny, IYO SKY will already be in Japan for WWE’s house shows on October 17th and 18th at Ryōgoku Sumo Hall in Tokyo.
