Rhyno Recalls Heath Slater Treating His Brother, Who Was Battling Cancer, With Kindness

Rhyno and Heath Slater were an odd couple who worked in WWE, winning the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Titles in 2016 and taking part in a number of memorable vignettes.

On WWE Retrospective, Rhyno recalled Heath’s kindness outside of the ring, sharing how Heath treated his brother, who was battling cancer.

“What really made it was opposites. Here is this rough tough, and here is this guy, ‘I got kids.’ He just makes you laugh. The best thing I can say is we developed a friendship. He’s such a great guy. When my brother got cancer, that weighed a lot. He only had two and a half months, and he passed. That was 2017. We would call him in the car, he’d be on the speaker, and you heard in his voice the same guy that talked to him before he got cancer. For those three to five minutes, he wasn’t thinking about how he had cancer and that he knew he was going to die. Heath would make it a point, ‘Let’s call your brother.’ Heath didn’t know it at the time, he was just being himself. We’ve all been touched with that, family members and stuff, but for a person…what he does in the ring made people so happy and when you can give that gift to someone, it’s something very special about that moment. It’s one of those things where it’s like, ‘I’ll do anything for you,'” said Rhyno.

Even after their WWE run ended with Rhyno’s departure in 2019, the two have continued to team on the independent scene.
