AJ Lee Says She Was Genuinely Stunned By ‘Therapy’ Chant In Return Promo, ‘People Told Me They Started Therapy Because Of That Segment’

AJ Lee returned to WWE on the September 5th episode of WWE SmackDown, joining her husband CM Punk in his battle against Seth Rollins and his wife Becky Lynch.

Lee delivered her return promo on the following episode of Raw, eliciting a “therapy” chant as she recounted her mental health journey.

Speaking to Stephanie McMahon on What’s Your Story, AJ was asked about the “therapy” chants.

“That was a genuine reaction of being stunned. I heard one person start chanting it, and a few people around him started chanting ‘Therapy.’ I thought it was so funny. One of the things about getting more performance practice is that I’m pretty comfortable. I think I’ve always been comfortable on the mic because I can turn into a different person. Now, I’m in the moment more than ever. I heard it and I was like, ‘I have to respond to this.’ I was joking because it was these three guys chanting ‘Therapy.’ Then, everyone started doing it. My mind exploded because if you have a judgmental idea of what you think the wrestling crowds could be, you don’t think they are in touch with their emotions, open-minded, and empathetic like that to chant for therapy. My worlds came together, and now, I just did a signing, and people had ‘Therapy is Cool’ merch that they made themselves. I’ve had so many people from that moment tell me they decided to start therapy because of that segment. It’s the coolest thing in the world to combine these two things that mean everything to me. I hope those fans know they are the reason I came back,” she said.

Elsewhere during the interview, AJ and Stephanie reflected on their 2015 tweets regarding equality in WWE. You can find their exchange here.
