Tony Khan Recalls Final AEW Dynamite Episode Of 2019, Says It Led To A Very Important Period Of Reflection

Things changed for Tony Khan in December 2019.

Over the years, Khan has been very open about the changes to his creative process in AEW. Specifically, Khan has extensively talked about a moment at the end of 2019 where he decided to take control of the booking following a poorly received episode of Dynamite.

Speaking with Jon Alba of Sports Illustrated for a new interview, Tony Khan recalled that episode of Dynamite and how it led to a period of reflection.

“I didn’t like the chaos at the end of the episode in Corpus Christi on December 18, 2019. I felt like we could’ve put a better show together. I remember we got there with a lot of people who had good ideas. I tried to take every idea and use them all and then it led to the ending of an episode that people in 2019 didn’t receive well. It was probably, in a crazy way, a blessing that we had the following week off and that we didn’t tape a show for Christmas. There were no shows, it was the last week where there was no AEW TV. So, from December 18 to January 1 of 2020, there were no shows and it was a very important period of reflection. I felt like we came out of it for the better.”

Elsewhere in a separate interview, Tony Khan recently said that some hardcore fans didn’t understand what Jon Moxley was doing at the start of 2025. Check out his full comments on the matter here.
