Colby Corino Recalls His First Match In NWA, George South Changing Things In The Ring

Colby Corino recalls his experiences with George South.
In 2019, Corino made his official debut for the main NWA promotion by facing George South on the second episode of their The Circle Squared show.
Speaking with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp for a new interview, Corino recalled trying to talk to South before the match took place.
“That was my totally first experience at NWA. I remember I showed up bright and early to GDP Studios where we filmed in Atlanta and it was like 10 a.m. No one else was there. I opened up the locker room door and it’s empty except in the corner there’s George South. He was the first person there. So eventually they put up a piece of paper, I saw I was wrestling George and all my anxiety washed out of body. I remember following George around all day and asking him if we could just talk a little bit about the match because it’s my first time TV experience. I want to make sure comes out well. He was like, ‘Yeah, buddy, just give me one second,’ and then he walked away for three hours. He did that to me all day until about a few minutes before the match. Then I cornered him. I was like, ‘George, can we please just talk a little bit?’ and he tells me a few things and it’s just the most basic of anything. Then we go out on the ring and we lock up and he goes, ‘Alright, buddy, I’m changing it.’ So that whole match is just listening to George South. You’ll probably hear him on it, telling me what to do on the cameras.”
Just a few years later, George South and Corino faced off in a deathmatch at an AML Wrestling event. Corino also talked about the process of putting that match together.
“We just figured that George would hate it. He always talks about how he hates flippy stuff, all this like death match stuff. I’m sitting in the AML locker room and I’m looking around everywhere. I was like, ‘Guys, I’m going to go ask George if he wants to have a death match with me.’ The whole locker room gets up and like follows behind me to see what George would say. George must have seen that, like everyone behind me when I asked him. He goes, ‘Well, if we build it right, buddy.’ I didn’t believe him for like two months. He kept being, ‘You ready for this death match, buddy?’ I’m like, ‘George, are you ready?’ He was not joking and what made me finally believe him was that after like three months after I asked him, ‘George, is this really happening? Are we really going to do this? Like the last part of our, all this stuff.’ He goes, ‘Well, buddy, when you’re a good artist, don’t matter what you paint with.’ I was like, ‘Oh, my God, this is the smartest man ever.’”
Elsewhere in the interview, Colby Corino chatted about his 2021 match with his father, Steve Corino. Check out his full comments by clicking here.
