Former WWE Writer Matt McCarthy: Vince McMahon Once said, ‘We’re Going To Do Sketches Like SNL But Better’

Comedian Matt McCarthy wrote for WWE from 2011 to 2012 and 2016-2018. In that time, he worked with Vince McMahon, and acquired stories of his own.

Appearing on Sam Brown University, McCarthy recalled Vince saying, “We’re going to start doing sketches like SNL, but better.”

He said that was a direct quote from McMahon.

McCarthy continued, recalling another McMahon story relating to Saturday Night Live.

“I did a pilot for some Nickelodeon show. Hugh Fink was the showrunner. All he wanted to talk to me about was Vince McMahon because he wrote at SNL when Dwayne Johnson first hosted. Vince McMahon went with him to the meeting with Lorne. He said Vince took over the meeting. None of the SNL writers knew what was going on because they’d never seen somebody out-alpha Lorne before. It got to the point where Vince was sitting on Lorne’s desk like, ‘Let me explain comedy to you guys,'” recalled McCarthy.

McCarthy noted that Vince was the one who said, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night” when The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) hosted SNL in 2000.

That was McMahon’s only appearance on SNL.
