Mercedes Moné: The Injury I Suffered In 2023 Changed Me Forever

Moné reflects on the major injury.

It was back in May 2023 when Mercedes Moné went down with a major ankle/foot injury. She suffered the injury at NJPW Resurgence in a match against Willow Nightingale to determine the first-ever NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion.

Moné’s injury caused a pivot to the match result, and thus Nightingale was crowned the first champion.

Moné looked back at that in her latest Moné Mag release. She noted that that night changed her forever. She added that she continued despite the injury because she did not want to let NJPW, the fans, or Nightingale down.

My main event against Willow Nightingale for the NJPW Strong Women’s Title changed me forever.

That day was tragic. The worst injury of my career. The pain was like nothing I’d ever felt—but I knew I had to finish the match. I couldn’t let the promoters or fans down, but I also didn’t want to let Willow down.

That match kicked off a beautiful women’s lineage in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, and I’m so proud to be part of its foundation. Sometimes the hardest moments create the strongest futures.

In March, Mercedes is going to be in action for multiple independent promotions in Europe as she’ll be defending the belts that she holds for the respective promotions.
