The Godfather Explains The Origin Of His Gimmick: ‘Me And My Wife Came Up With This Godfather Idea’

The Godfather says his wife came up with his wrestling gimmick.

WWE’s Attitude Era was a different time in wrestling. A lot of over-the-top characters were born in this era and became popular among fans. One such character was The Godfather.

Speaking with Rewind Recap Relive, The Godfather revealed that his wife came up with his Godfather gimmick.

“I’ve been married three times. My third time, I’ve been married 25 years and she was the one that created The Godfather.”

Later in the interview, he discusses this part in detail and also explains how The Rock played a huge role in getting the name over with the fans.

“I went to [The] Rock. Only thing that I would say in the promos was, ‘Power to The Nation.’ That’s all I was saying. Me and my wife came up with this Godfather idea. Mostly my wife. I fought her on a lot [of things]. I wanted to be a bad pimp, not a good pimp. So we fought on everything like that. Then we had an idea. The inside of these hats, at the time that I wear they were called Godfather Hats.

It says ‘Godfather’ in them. So I’m like, ‘Man, I should call myself The Godfather.’ So I went to The Rock. I’m like, ‘Hey, bro. Instead of calling me Kama, I want you to call me Godfather from now on.’ He goes, ‘What?’ I’m like, ‘I’m working on something.’ He goes, ‘All right.’ So the night that he called me The Godfather … people started calling me Godfather.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he also discussed being on the Legends Contract for the longest time among other stars. Fans can check his comments here.
