Matt Cardona Says Nick Khan Got The Ball Rolling On His Return

Matt Cardona officially returned to WWE on the January 2 episode of WWE SmackDown. Cardona had previously been part of the TNA-NXT invasion and John Cena’s Last Match tournament.

Speaking to Cody Rhodes on What Do You Want To Talk About? Cardona explained how his return came together.

“I’m working for TNA, but not technically under contract. TNA does the invasion of NXT, and they asked to have me. I know I’m not under contract, but I’m going to sneak in. I’ll do it. That leads to a match and Chelsea is doing media for Rumble in Saudi. Nick Khan is there. She said Nick, ‘Did you see my husband wrestle at NXT?’ Nick is like, ‘I always wanted to meet your husband and talk to your husband. Give him my number.’ She gave me Nick Khan’s number, and you know I’m texting immediately. Nick called me and said, ‘What do you want?’ I said, ‘I want to come back.’ The ball kind of got rolling from there,” he said.

While he returned as Zack Ryder for Cena’s Last Match Tournament, he came back full-time as Matt Cardona, the name he got over on the independent scene following his WWE release in 2020.
