Athena On Maya World: She’s Already A Must-Watch Performer, I Can’t Imagine What She’s Going To Be Doing Years From Now

Athena has high praise for various ROH stars.

The recent Supercard Of Honor event featured a Survival Of The Fittest match for the ROH Women’s World Championship. Aside from Athena, names like Maya World, Billie Starkz, Trish Adora, Zayda Steel, and Yuka Sakazaki all took part in the bout.

Speaking with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp for a new interview, Athena first spoke about Maya World — her “estranged daughter”.

“Like mother, like estranged daughter, that’s what I like to say, before she decided not to join my team of MIT minions. Maya’s so good. Like she reminds me so much of myself. I love to tell her that she’s never going to amount to anything, ‘cause she’s already surpassed where I was in my career at that point in time. When I was her age, I was still trying to figure out who I was and grinding on the indies and look at her. She’s tagging with Hyan and traveling the world and getting all this recognition. I remember talking to her right before she got signed and we had a show here in, I think it was in Fort Worth and we put her in our Texas Rumble and she was like, ‘No one’s gonna react for me.’ I remember looking at her like, ‘I need you to understand what I see in you and what everyone else sees in you. You need to have the confidence.’ When she walked out there, the whole place erupted like I won at All In. I got to the back and I was like, ‘See, I told you. Just listen.’ But she’s gonna be absolutely phenomenal. She’s not only a must watch performer currently, I can’t imagine what she’s gonna be doing two, three, five, 10 years from now. She’s literally gonna break barriers. She’s already doing that. She just doesn’t realize it. But you know what? She had a good coach in me. Just to pat myself on the back.”

Athena proceeded to show some love to Trish Adora and Yuka Sakazaki as well.

“Yeah, when you look at this lineup, it’s the best women from around the world. I feel like a lot of people don’t get to see Trish Adora shine like we all know that she can. Trish and I actually had a match very early in my championship run, the Beginning of Forever, if you will. I remember she was so unique and hard hitting and she was hard to counter because, like I’m short and I’m used to being tossed around, but I’m not used to someone being on their knees, tossing me around like I’m a sack of potatoes, like a sack of nothing. That’s exactly what Trish brings to the table, unpredictability and innovation. Yuka Sakazaki, one of the hardest hitters I’ve ever been in the ring with. She looks tiny and cute and I used to call her the genie girl before I actually knew her name. Now that little genie girl is proving that not only is she magic, she’s going to hit you as hard as possible while smiling in your face. So I’m extremely thrilled and pumped to be in a match with all of these competitors, not only because they’re phenomenal in each of their own element, but because I’ve beaten them before.”
