UFC Freedom 250: Topuria Fancied to Secure a Statement Victory at the White House
Ilia Topuria will bid to maintain his unbeaten record in mixed martial arts (MMA) when he faces Justin Gaethje at the White House on Sunday, June 14.
Topuria’s lightweight title will be on the line against a fighter who is renowned for being one of the grittiest competitors in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
With that in mind, read on as we look at the UFC Freedom 250 fight card, before previewing what promises to be one the best MMA bouts of the year.

Topuria faces a date with destiny
Topuria has compiled an impressive career CV, winning 17 consecutive fights. His victims include some of the top-ranked fighters in the lightweight division.
His most recent victories over Alexander Volkanovski (UFC 298), Max Holloway (UFC 308) and Charles Oliviera (UFC 317) were all achieved by knockout.
Intriguingly, 20 of Gaethje’s 27 MMA victories have been by knockout, setting up what could be a truly explosive encounter in Washington.
While online bookmakers rate Topuria as the overwhelming favourite to win the fight, it would be foolish to think that Gaethje has no chance of upsetting the odds.
For bettors, the main event presents an intriguing wagering opportunity. While Topuria is rightly favoured given his undefeated record and devastating finishing ability, Gaethje’s knockout power means the fight carries a level of unpredictability often compared to coinflip gambling in combat sports circles.
A single strike can instantly change the outcome, making markets such as method of victory, total rounds and knockout props particularly appealing for those seeking value beyond the traditional moneyline bet.
Xtreme Couture head coach Eric Nicksick believes that the 37-year-old could exploit a flaw he spotted in one of the defending champion’s previous fights.
“I think Gaethje always has a chance in any fight,” Nicksick said. “I think Ilia has more paths to victory and opportunities to win if he decides to use his grappling.
“But I go back to the (Dustin) Poirier versus Gaethje fight when Gaethje, out of nowhere, throws the same-side head kick. And if I’m fighting Topuria, you have to keep his back hand active.
“You have to be able to jam that with kicks. So, if I’m on Gaethje’s side, I’m looking to kick a lot on the same side, exiting and keeping his right hand busy. To keep it jammed, you have to kick that thing.
“The fight that Ilia got hit with the head kick, Jai Herbert, there’s some flaws there. With Trevor Wittman, Gaethje and those guys, they’ll have a good game plan to make it competitive.”
Gaethje’s most recent knockout victory over Poirier at UFC was achieved by the head kick knockout referenced by Nicksick.
He will undoubtedly be aware that Topuria could be vulnerable to the same tactic and it would be no surprise to see him attempt the same move at the White House.
However, while the veteran UFC star is guaranteed to make life difficult for Topuria, it is hard to imagine him claiming an upset victory.
Elsewhere on the card, Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane meet in an interim heavyweight title fight that is proving to be a head-scratcher for the bookies.
Pereira is marginally favoured despite giving up a sizeable weight advantage to Gane. The 38-year-old has recorded 11 knockouts in his 13 MMA victories.
Although Gane has the power to trouble Pereira, he will need to ensure that his footwork keeps him out of the way of his opponent’s single shot power.
Gane’s previous experience at heavyweight makes him a formidable opponent for Pereira, and this contest may ultimately go the distance.
