AJ Styles Confirms That He Was Supposed To Win At WWE Battleground 2017, Failed To Kick Out Of Pin Attempt

AJ Styles failed to get his shoulder up during a title match with Kevin Owens.
Back in July 2017, Kevin Owens defeated AJ Styles to win the United States Championship at the Battleground pay-per-view. Word quickly spread that Styles was supposed to retain the title, but failed to kick out of a cradle pin attempt from Owens.
‘The Phenomenal One’ recalled this incident on the latest episode of the Phenomenally Retro podcast.
“Here’s something that people don’t know. When I lost that one to him, I wasn’t supposed to lose. My shoulder was supposed to be up. I thought it was, I was pissed. I came back like, ‘What the freak is going on?’ Vince was like, ‘Your shoulder wasn’t up.’ I was like, ‘1000% it was up.’ I’m mad, not because I lost, because why the freak did he count something that wasn’t a pin? He goes, ‘Show him, take him to the truck and show him.’ I go back and watch it, sure enough, my shoulder is down. So, I go to Vince, ‘You’re right, I was wrong. Sorry about that.’”
Elsewhere in the interview, Styles talked about Sami Zayn’s recent title loss. Check out his full comments on the matter by clicking here.
