Don Callis Almost Managed Sabu In ECW, Paul Heyman Had Issues With The Height Difference

Don Callis almost managed Sabu in ECW.

While chatting with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp for a new interview, Callis was asked if he has ever had any problems when it comes to managing talent that is shorter than him. After joking that he refuses to do the “WWE method” and fake his height, Callis recalled Paul Heyman having an issue with the idea of him managing Sabu.

“I refuse to do it. I’m like, ‘If you can’t get yourself over, I’m not going to diminish myself,’ But here’s the thing, to answer your question, absolutely. ECW, I remember when I first came in there, I think Paul was still trying to figure out what he wanted to do with me. He was like, ‘I want to look at you, maybe managing Sabu.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, wow. This is cool.’ Sabu, God rest his soul, really good guy at the time and obviously a guy that a lot of the boys were in awe of. There was no gimmick with that guy. They did a pre-tape with me and Sabu. Paul Heyman comes up to me and goes, ‘We’re not doing this.’ I go, ‘Why?’ He goes, ‘You make him look like a very small person.’ Because Sabu was maybe 5’9, and I was like 6’2. So it did cause an issue there, although I don’t know me managing Sabu would have been a really fabulous fit.”

Callis went on to recall wrestling Sabu in a tag match back in 2002.

“But yeah, we wrestled in MLP. I believe it was me and Terry Taylor, who were the Border City Wrestling Tag Champions, made literally dozens of dollars at that job. We wrestled Scott and Sabu and the best was I convinced Terry Taylor to take the table spot—so I didn’t have to take any bumps. I think I looked at Scott and said, ‘For 200 bucks, there’s no tables and keep Sabu away from me.’ ‘Cause what would happen with Sabu is he’d punch you, it’d be a good working punch and he’d go, ‘Sorry.’ I go, ‘What’s he sorry for?’ Well, he was sorry for the next one, which was a full shoot. He almost knocked me out.”
