How Did WWE Never Get Boring?

WWE started back on January 7, 1953, yet, still to this day, they stream to millions of weekly viewers globally. However, strip away the production, and the general core of wrestling is still what it was in the mid to late 1900s.

That begs the question. “Why did WWE never get boring?” How have they been running for so long, despite effectively doing the same thing for years?

Same Ring, Different Objective

Pat Patterson spent decades as WWE’s chief match-planner and is known for his idea for the Royal Rumble. The Royal Rumble is a battle royal, a format older than most people reading this. During this event, competitors enter at timed intervals instead of arriving together. The last person remaining in the ring after all competitors have been eliminated wins.

WWE went a step further. From 1993, the winner of the Royal Rumble earned a championship match at WrestleMania. Many even refer to this event as the “Super Bowl of sports entertainment”.

While WrestleMania was active, Money in the Bank came about as an extra. The match itself was a ladder match, where wrestlers needed to unlock a briefcase that dangled from the ceiling.

The Elimination Chamber is also one to remember. This took the Royal Rumble’s staggered entry and enclosed it. Hell in a Cell and TLC left the win condition alone entirely and only changed the furniture.

Now, as you can see, the format stayed the same. It’s still wrestling. What they did differently, however, was make it unique.

It Happens Everywhere Else as Well

WWE wasn’t the first sport or organisation to consider this, either. You see it everywhere. Regular drinks, games, sports, competitions, organisations, etc., use their base format but make it unique as target audiences get somewhat bored with the old format.
Take a look at chess, for example. The pieces have moved identically for centuries. However, people don’t just play classical chess anymore. You have rapid, blitz, and bullet. All of them are in and of themselves chess, just with a modified clock.

You then have Slingo games like Slingo The Godfather. People play Slingo because it combines two fan-loved gambling formats, slots and bingo. Separately they’re played often, but together they provide that extra layer of excitement for fans of these games.
It even goes as far as Coca-Cola. They still sell their beverage, which they developed in 1886. However, they’ve branched off into different types, like diet, and flavours, like cherry.

Similar to the above, WWE has remained popular due to making their regular wrestling format more interesting over the years.

Why It Keeps Working

The WWE didn’t invent a new way to wrestle; it remains the same. What they invented, however, was a new reason to watch.

Wrestling is the underlying factor that people love. The new additions are what keep people interested and coming back.

That’s how and why WWE will continue to grow its popularity. They have a system that works; they just need to add something unique every now and then.
