Will Ospreay: WWE Style Is Very Minimalistic, I Prefer What We Do
Will Ospreay is regarded by many as one of the best wrestlers in the world, blending his athleticism with his striking to put together some of the most action-packed matches in history.
Ospreay first stood out in New Japan, and has carried that style to AEW.
He signed with AEW in 2024, but also had an offer from WWE.
“Representatives did,” Ospreay told Ariel Helwani on the Ariel Helwani Show about whether he ever spoke with WWE during that time. “They were interested, for sure. There was an offer, and a really lovely offer, but it involved me moving to the States, and I have no ambition to move over there.”
Asked if he would’ve signed with WWE if they didn’t require him to move to the US, he said he wouldn’t due to the overall style of WWE.
“I do respect it, I really do, but I don’t like the way it’s filmed, I don’t like the wrestling behind it, I think it’s very minimalistic. I’ll never say never, because that’s what we do to make sure we keep all our options open, but right now, with the format and how much fun I’m having in AEW and how much freedom I have to be me, I don’t have anyone putting a script in my hand.
“The comparison in our main event matches is very different. One spear for them will be super satisfying. Honestly, I respect it. I wish I could get a positive [reaction] with that. I wish I could. It’s just not in me. I prefer what we do. I prefer taking people on rides and showing people different ways I can get into a Styles Clash and the full contact of it. I’ve been seeing WWE recently, and I saw this one clip and the girl missed her by a country mile. It’s not just the girls, it’s the guys as well. I do wonder if they’re being told, ‘We’re already making money, you don’t need to kill one another.’ I’m not saying everyone kills each other in AEW, but there is more contact, and I like that. I like to feel alive when I do pro wrestling. I don’t want people to whiff a strike on me. I’d much rather people hit me than it look bad on TV.”
Ahead of WrestleMania 40, Triple H seemingly took a shot at Ospreay in a media interview, saying he was running from the grind. Ospreay fired back on AEW TV, mentioning Triple H grinding on the boss’s daughter.
