Will Ospreay Says WWE Wanted Him For Cruiserweight Classic, Was Making More Money In NJPW

WWE held the first and only Cruiserweight Classic in 2016 featuring talent like Kota Ibushi, Zack Sabre Jr, Johnny Gargano, Mustafa Ali, and more. They wanted Will Ospreay for the tournament.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani of the Ariel Helwani Show, Ospreay recalled WWE’s offer for the tournament.

“I received an offer in 2016 to be part of the Cruiserweight Classic. I think they saw there was a video of me going into Korakuen Hall debuting in New Japan, and they offered me a deal to sign there, but the money was terrible. It was bad. I was making more money in New Japan. That was the thing that blew my mind. I didn’t know I was going to get an offer from New Japan. I just wanted to go because the Super Juniors and the IWGP Junior Title were one of the coolest things for me. After I signed my deal, it was funny comparing the two. ‘How am I making more money at this place?’ I’m sure I could’ve made more money at WWE if I signed there and done a good job, especially after 205 Live happened, but it just wasn’t for me. It’s never been something that has taken my interest,” he said.

Ospreay debuted in NJPW in 2016.
