Jake Roberts Says Rick Martel Was ‘Dead Against’ Doing Blindfold Match At WrestleMania VII

Jake Roberts says that his opponent in his famous blindfold match at WrestleMania VII, Rick Martel, did not want to do the match.

At WrestleMania VII in 1991, Roberts and Rick Martel would meet in a blindfold match at the show which largely featured the pair blindly trying to find each other in the ring. The finish would occur when Roberts cornered Martel and hit his iconic DDT to walk away with the victory.

While speaking to 12 News in a new interview, Jake Roberts reflected on the match, noting that Rick Martel was ‘dead against’ doing the match.

“I loved it, man. It was funny because Martel didn’t want to do it. He didn’t think it’d work. He was dead against it, and he argued, and he stood his ground, and finally, Vince said, ‘okay, we’re going to do it in Binghamton, New York, let you guys try it.’ I talked to Rick before and told him what to do, and we went out there and it worked, and to be paid good money, to walk into a ring and have a hood put on and then spend the rest of the night just moving your finger around pointing felt pretty damn good. I remember walking back to the locker room and I hadn’t even broke a sweat. Nothing, yeah, nothing hurt on me. My body didn’t hurt, and the fans were so good to me with it. Oh, my God. I have so many fans that come to me telling me they got hoarse yelling at me. I said, ‘well, goddamn, you were at home, man. I didn’t hear you.'”
