Maven Says He And Randy Orton Once Had A ‘Dropkick Match’ At WWE Live Event

Maven recalls having a “dropkick match” with Randy Orton.

When WWE used to run house shows more frequently, some wrestlers wrestled each other almost every day. At times, they would also try new things and see what would work on television or just do something different to entertain the fans in attendance.

One of the wrestlers Maven worked with during live events was Randy Orton. It appears that they had a dropkick match at some point which, as the name suggests, was just them hitting one dropkick after another to see who the crowd cheers more for.

Speaking with Rewind Recap Relive in an interview (published in September 2026), Maven recalled discussing the idea for this with Arn Anderson.

“We had a house show. Arn Anderson was our agent. If you’re going to do anything in wrestling, house shows are where you want to practice. They’re where you want to get the bugs out of anything. Randy [Orton] is as athletic as anybody. The dropkick was the one move I could throw. Well, Randy can throw a dropkick as equally impressive as mine, if not more so. But he can also do all the other moves as perfect as you can imagine.

We had an idea because in our match, we would have a standoff every time where we would both, whoever was the heel, we would shine the babyface up. Then the person would hit a dropkick and then go for a cover, shoot off. Then the other person would come up and hit a dropkick. Then we would just square off with each other.

It would always get a decent [reaction], and then people would applaud once we both hit our dropkicks. So we went to Arn and asked, ‘What if we both just hit dropkicks just to see who [fans] cheers the loudest?’ Arn was like, ‘If you guys can get it over, I’m fine with it.’ So me and Randy, kind of half-hearted, [said], ‘Let’s do something different.’ I think we each probably threw three to four dropkicks. We would hit the dropkick, jump up, and see who the fans cheered for the most. We started that off. Then the heel would cut the other person off, and we’d get into the match. But yeah, we had a dropkick match.”

When asked who had the highest one out of the two, Maven said:

“Randy’s better at anything than me. I was just known for a dropkick. Randy’s great. There’s nothing he can’t do.”
