Skadi Reflects On Carrying Marcela’s Legacy In CMLL
Skadi comments on carrying Marcela’s legacy in CMLL.
Marcela is often regarded as one of the best female wrestlers in Mexican wrestling. Over the course of her wrestling career, she held numerous titles, including 5 CMLL World Women’s Championship reigns, which is a record. Her daughter, Skadi, also went on to become a wrestler just like her.
Speaking with Fightful’s Luis Pulido, Skadi commented on how difficult it is to follow in her mother’s footsteps.
“The truth is, it’s been a pretty tough journey. I was blessed with a mom who wasn’t like anyone else. I had a mom who is Mexico’s greatest female wrestler, who opened so many doors for us. I wasn’t just the daughter of any wrestler; I was the daughter of Marcela, the one who was champion, who traveled to Japan a thousand times, who traveled all over the world. It was very difficult for me; in fact, at the beginning of my career, I didn’t want people to say I was my mom’s daughter because I knew how complicated it was going to be. Even today, there are still a lot of comparisons—that I don’t have her career, that I don’t have her experience, and a whole lot of other things. But we’re different people with totally different careers from different generations. It’s been a pretty difficult journey to this day; I think being the daughter of someone so great in women’s wrestling has taken a huge toll both physically and mentally because suddenly you feel like you have to be them. I feel like people demand too much of us to be like them, even though we’re totally different. We have different ways of thinking; we’re from different generations—everything is very different. The fact that my mom also gave me this freedom to keep doing what I loved, and that maybe she saw I wasn’t doing it right and told me it wasn’t that important for my career—because if she hadn’t put the brakes on me or given me a good scolding, maybe I wouldn’t have understood it the way I do today. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become incredibly grateful to her; as you said, she paved the way for a very important generation. I think she’s one of the most important figures and who fought incredibly hard for this. Today we already have women’s main events and two matches on the card, when back then they gave her only a few minutes to see if they could convince the audience there should be women in professional wrestling. So I’m very happy about the fact that she’s my mom; she’s not just anyone; she’s the wrestler. And I feel like I’m doing a good job; I think I’m going to carry on her legacy with great honor, and we’ll keep working so she feels very proud of us—and of me.”
