When UFC Fight Cancellations Affect Bets
UFC 324 lost two preliminary fights before the January 24 event in Las Vegas. Cameron Smotherman’s bout with Ricky Turcios was canceled after Smotherman collapsed at the weigh-ins. Michael Johnson’s fight with Alexander Hernandez was pulled on event day after unusual betting activity prompted an alert.
The missing bouts also left wagers unsettled, with different rules for straight bets, parlays and promotions.
Two Cancellations With Different Causes
Smotherman made weight on January 23, then fell as he stepped away from the scale. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and subsequently discharged, according to a UFC spokesperson. Turcios was also removed from the card.
The next day, sportsbooks flagged betting patterns around Johnson vs. Hernandez. UFC CEO Dana White later confirmed that the promotion had been contacted by its betting-integrity service and removed the matchup. That decision wasn’t a finding that either fighter had broken any rules.
The UFC had faced similar concerns months earlier. As per this report on the Dulgarian betting investigation, the promotion said its monitoring partner was examining unusual activity around Isaac Dulgarian’s November 2025 loss to Yadier del Valle.
A Canceled Fight Isn’t A Losing Pick
When a scheduled fight never starts, bets on its winner are generally graded as void. That usually means the original cash stake is returned instead of a win or loss being recorded. Other wagers depend on the sportsbook’s rules.
FOX Sports’ report on Smotherman’s weigh-in collapse described how quickly the medical situation unfolded before his fight with Turcios was canceled. For anyone holding a simple pre-fight moneyline bet on either man, there was no contest to settle.
When A Bonus Offer Is Attached
The same rules can affect someone whose first wager came with a BetMGM bonus code. BetMGM’s published first-bet terms provide bonus-bet credit after a qualifying loss, but exclude wagers that become void, even in part. A canceled fight can therefore mean the original cash stake is returned without any promotional credit.
Eligibility and terms can vary by state and offer date, so a promotion attached to one ticket shouldn’t be assumed to work like another. The outcome also depends on whether the original wager used deposited money or an existing bonus-bet credit.
Parlays Can Be Settled Differently
Suppose a fan had included Johnson vs. Hernandez in a three-fight parlay. A standard parlay would generally have the canceled selection removed, leaving the remaining two picks active at recalculated odds. If those two fights win, the payout is based on the adjusted price.
The rules can change for same-game parlays, boosted wagers and bonus-bet tickets. Those shouldn’t automatically be treated as standard cash parlays.
| Type of wager | Common treatment if the fight is canceled |
| Single fight-winner bet | Voided, with the cash stake returned |
| Regular parlay with one canceled leg | Remaining selections continue at adjusted odds |
| Bonus-bet wager | Bonus credit may be returned, depending on the promotion |
| First-bet offer on a voided fight | May no longer qualify for promotional credit |
Johnson vs. Hernandez was removed only hours before UFC 324. Someone with an unsettled parlay still had to check how that missing fight affected the ticket.
An Integrity Alert Isn’t A Verdict
The Johnson-Hernandez cancellation followed a warning about betting patterns, not a public ruling that either athlete had done anything wrong. Sportsbooks sometimes restrict betting limits while they review unusual activity. The UFC decided not to let the fight proceed.
In the Dulgarian case, the UFC described using independent monitoring to examine wagering around a completed bout. An investigation may produce additional findings, but the existence of suspicious activity alone shouldn’t be treated as proof of misconduct.
What Fans Should Check After A Cancellation
Medical withdrawals and betting alerts can remove fights from a UFC card with very little notice. The reason matters for understanding the event, but it won’t necessarily tell someone how a ticket will be settled.
For anyone holding an outstanding wager, the relevant details are whether the bout started, what type of bet was placed and which settlement terms apply. UFC 324 showed how much those rules can matter once a scheduled fight disappears from the card.
