Although the big fight in England on July 28 was the Dillian Whyte vs. Joseph Parker fight, Dave Allen perhaps stole the show with one of the biggest British upsets of the year.
Allen knocked out undefeated prospect Nick Webb to win a title eliminator for the British heavyweight title on the undercard of Whyte vs. Parker. The knockout in the fourth round when Allen landed an overhand right to Webb and took him out of the fight.
What’s notable about the win was that Allen fought as recently as five weeks ago when he got stopped in the 10th round by undefeated French prospect and former Olympic gold medalist Tony Yoka. Allen came in as a last-minute replacement as Webb’s opponent with the fight taking place on the pay-per-view portion of the card in the United Kingdom.
The 26-year-old Allen is no stranger to fighting tough heavyweights. Allen has fought the likes of Luis Ortiz and Whyte in the past, but never got a signature win to catapult himself into the upper echelon of fighters at heavyweight.
Allen wasn't the only boxer on that undercard to score a big knockout win. Undefeated prospect Joshua Buatsi knocked out Andrejs Pokumeiko in the first round to win the vacant WBA International light heavyweight title and improve his pro record to 7-0. In another WBA regional title fight on the card, Conor Benn scored a unanimous decision win over Cedrick Peynaud to win the WBA Continental welterweight title moving to 13-0 as a pro.
