The last two years have been a trying time for Danny Garcia inside the ring.
Garcia barely lost to Keith Thurman in a welterweight title unification in a fight that was seen by millions on CBS in 2017 and then the following year, lost a close decision to Shawn Porter with the WBC title on the line.
Now in a loaded welterweight class that includes the likes of Porter, Thurman, Errol Spence Jr. and Manny Pacquiao (all fighters competing under the PBC banner), Garcia finds himself as the odd man out in terms of getting big fights at the moment. Now Garcia finds himself looking to get back into title contention once more when he faces the always-tough Adrian Granados on April 20 in Carson, California. In a recent media conference call, Garcia told Fightful about his desire to get a big fight once again, especially a rematch against Thurman and Porter, who hold the WBA “Super” and WBC welterweight titles, respectively.
“Those are definitely fights I want to avenge. I want to avenge on those fights because I obviously feel like I did enough to win both of those fights but I can't worry about that right now. I feel like those fights will always be there in the future, in the near future. So I just have to make sure I go in there Saturday night and handle business, first,” Garcia said.
The 31-year-old Garcia finds himself in the same position as he did a year ago when he was coming out of a big title loss. In his first fight after the 2017 loss to Thurman, Garcia showcased his power by knocking out former world champion Brandon Rios, which opened the way for Garcia to fight Porter for the WBC title last September.
Garcia lost that fight against Porter and is now seemingly in the back of the line in terms of getting a title shot. A win over Granados, especially in impressive fashion, would change Garcia’s fortunes for the better and the two-division champion is taking an improved mindset when it comes to this fight compared to his last bounce-back fight against Rios.
“I'm a winner. So it's always tough when a fight doesn't go your way, but I try not to think about that. I know there's a great fight and the future is now, so I can't worry about what happened in the past. My mind set is just simply winning on Saturday night and everything else it just doesn't matter to me,” Garcia said.
