Exclusive: Andrew Moloney: I Will Leave Kal Yafai No Choice But To Fight Me

It's been no secret that undefeated super flyweight contender Andrew Moloney has had his sights on Kal Yafai and his WBA title for some time, but time and time again, his calls for a title challenge have largely gone unanswered.

Now, Moloney has an opportunity to become Yafai's mandatory challenger soon and all he has to do is win his next fight. After winning his first 18 pro bouts, all in his native country of Australia, Moloney will now travel nearly halfway around the world for his next fight in the hopes of getting a world title bout soon. Moloney will go to Chile for a fight against Miguel Gonzalez on March 22 for a WBA title eliminator.

One would think that Moloney would take this fight as a chance to send a message to Yafai, but Moloney firmly believes the message was already sent in his last fight, a 10th round stoppage win over Luis Concepcion back in September. As far as what the message will be for his next fight, Moloney told Fightful that it is simply a confirmation that he and Yafai will someday fight for the title.

"I believe I made that statement in my last fight by stopping Luis Concepcion and beating him far more convincingly than Yafai did. I see this fight as my opportunity to move into the mandatory position and leave Yafai with no option but to face me," Moloney said.

Although Moloney wants to finally get his shot at the world title, he said he's not looking past Gonzalez who has won 29 of his 30 career fights.

"Yes, of course the world title fight is something I think about, there is not a day that goes by where I don’t think about becoming world champion, that is my dream. But I am certainly not looking past Gonzalez. I know that I need to win this fight or my chance to fight for a world title may never come," Moloney said.

Fightful previously spoke to Moloney before his fight against Concepcion and spoke about wanting to fight Moloney in 2019 and that article can be read at this link.

The fight between Moloney and Gutierrez is taking place at the Gran Arena Monticello in San Francisco de Mostazal, Chile on March 22.
