UFC 327: Prochazka faces tough title battle against Ulberg
UFC bettors will be in their element next month as two of the best light heavyweights in mixed martial arts go head-to-head for the vacant title.
Current champion Alex Pereira officially steps aside on April 11, opening the door for Jiri Prochazka or Carlos Ulberg to become king of the division.
Prochazka previously held the title in 2022, but subsequently suffered two defeats against Pereira over the next couple of years.
He is now the bookmakers’ favourite to climb back to the top of the tree, but will not find things easy against a fighter who is unbeaten in his last nine bouts.
Bettors more familiar with playing slots may feel it is easier to predict the outcome of a single spin on their favourite game than forecasting who will win the fight.
Both fighters believe they are capable of hitting the jackpot, setting up what promises to be a thrilling contest in Miami on April 11.
A knockout finish is on the cards
Prochazka has already recorded several impressive victories over some of the division’s best fighters including Jamahal Hill, Dominick Reyes and Khalil Rountree Jr.
He produced a dominant display against Rountree Jr on his most recent outing, securing a knockout win in the third round to take his career record to 32-5-1.
Ulberg has pieced together an eye-catching nine-fight winning streak that includes wins over Alonzo Menifield and Jan Błachowicz and Dominick Reyes.
The Kiwi showcased his title credentials with a one-sided first-round stoppage at UFC Fight Night in Perth, Australia, last September.
Both fighters have knockout power, a factor which increases the chances of this contest ending early. Predicting the result is not easy.
Prochazka averages 7.02 strikes landed per minute. By contrast, Ulberg lands fewer strikes but maintains higher accuracy and rarely takes clean shots in return.
He will hope to take advantage of Prochazka’s willingness to trade. His ability to time counter-attacks could be the difference maker in the fight.
Prochazka boasts superior grappling skills, which may tip the fight in his favour if it goes to the mat. Ground work could be crucial in the latter stages.
Previous experience in title fights may work to Prochazka’s advantage, although it would be foolish to underestimate Ulberg’s chances of upsetting the odds. Whoever wins, one thing is certain – this main event will be nothing like the UFC 326 one before it.
Elsewhere on a stacked card in Miami, UFC flyweight champion Joshua Van’s first title defence will a be tough clash against rising Japanese star Tatsuro Taira.
Van claimed the belt with a TKO victory over Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 323 in December. He also beat Rei Tsuruya, Bruno Silva and Brandon Royva last year.
Taira recorded a second-round finish against former champion Brandon Moreno on the same card to secure his first shot at the flyweight title.
The 26-year-old is bidding to make history by becoming the first ever Japanese-born UFC champion of the modern era. However, Van could be the value bet to win the fight.
