Daniel Cormier May Consider Returning To Heavyweight

MMA

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier is defending the gold against Volkan Oezdemir in the co-main event of UFC 220.

Despite his dominance at light heavyweight, a return to the heavyweight division could be in the future for Cormier.

“It would be the most amazing thing in the world,” Cormier told MMA Junkie Radio“That would take some thinking, some talking and a real solid plan to try to get back to the type of weight that I would need to compete against those guys. Because, again, I’m not going in there to lose and say I gave it my best shot. If I go in there with Miocic or Ngannou, I’m going to win. That’s just who I am. So that would just be me and my team really coming up with a solid plan on how I’m going to get up to a healthy, strong, 235, 240 pounds to go and fight those dudes.”

Cormier has had lots of success at heavyweight in the past, including winning the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix before coming to the UFC.

Whether a return to heavyweight happens or not, one thing that DC still loves to do is fighting for the love of competition.

“I don’t have to do anything else,” Cormier said. “I’m just fighting now because I love this sport. I feel like my career speaks for itself. Independent of anything else. I know I’ve been closely tied with Jones and everything else. But I feel that I’ve done enough to where I feel good, man. I’m not chasing anything else. I’m just fighting because I love competition. So, yeah, I’m totally secure in the way my career has been and how it’s going.”

UFC 220 takes place on Saturday, January 20 from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts with Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
