Eddie Alvarez is the UFC Lightweight Champion. But if he had things his way, he wouldn't even be in the weight class.
During his Q&A session, as seen on Fightful.com Friday afternoon, Alvarez was asked about potentially fighting UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor. McGregor was slated to compete against Rafael dos Anjos for the UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 196, before an injury sidelined RDA. Instead, McGregor dropped a fight to Nate Diaz at 170 pounds, which is where Alvarez would want the fight, too.
“I started my career at 170. I wouldn’t have to make the cut, so I’d actually appreciate that, if he made it at 170. I don’t like going to 155 -- I do it because everyone else does. It just means we’ll have a better training camp, more power, and it will be more enjoyable. 100%, I’d fight McGregor at welterweight," said Alvarez.
Alvarez and lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov have went back and forth trashing each other of late, with Khabib saying that the title interests him, not a fight with Eddie Alvarez. During the Q&A, Alvarez also had choice words for the undefeated Nurmagomedov.
“I fight the best, Khabib fights the rest. That’s how that goes. Tony (Ferguson)’s calling me out, Khabib’s calling me out. When you win the belt, everyone calls you out, just so you know. I’ve got my own agenda," Alvarez said. "I’m trying to get this fight.”
