EXCLUSIVE: Frank Trigg Says GSP Better Matchup For Bisping Than Romero

MMA

Frank Trigg says Michael Bisping benefits from a George St-Pierre matchup.

On Wednesday, news broke about the UFC Middleweight Champion Bisping fighting the returning St-Pierre. On his weekly appearance on Fightful MMA's podcast, Trigg said the three years off could benefit St-Pierre, but he believes Bisping has improved since St-Pierre's hiatus began.

UFC 300 Weigh Ins

"When GSP looked at Bisping a couple years ago, he wasn't a very good wrestler, now Bisping is a very good wrestler. One thing I do worry about now is how Bisping is going to match up with GSP's wrestling, where he may nullify him and make it more of a stand-up game. GSP is not a big power puncher, there's going to be a question about his chin since the Hendricks fight, he has had a long time off to help his head heal," said Trigg.

The match-up comes at a peculiar time because Bisping has not faced any of the top contenders since winning the championship. Yoel Romero in particular has been in position for a title fight for a while. Trigg said Bisping is not picking his fights but he would understand why he agreed to fight St-Pierre.

"In my personal opinion, Bisping can't beat the top three contenders. He's not choosing his opponents, obviously at the time Dana wanted the Henderson rematch and the UFC put together, this current ownership put together this particular fight with GSP and Bisping. So Bisping isn't hand picking his opponent like people are saying but he's definitely wiping his brow and saying 'shew' when he's given these opponents because GSP is an easier fight for him than Yoel Romero. Not saying GSP is an easier fight, don't go nuts start emailing me hate letters, I'm just saying of the two, GSP is an easier fight than Yoel Romero for Bisping," said Trigg.

Trigg would also discuss a scenario where St-Pierre wins the Middleweight championship and has to fight the likes of Romero and Ronaldo Souza, he even theorizes how he could end up fighting Conor McGregor. On the podcast, he and host "Showdown Joe" Ferraro also talked about UFC's future broadcasting situation and how it effects UFC building stars.
