Former world champion Bernard Hopkins isn’t a fan of either Conor McGregor nor Floyd Mayweather taking each other on in a major boxing fight.
Hopkins has been one of several critics of the fight, calling out McGregor for fighting an all-time great boxer despite not having any professional or amateur boxing experience. Hopkins called Mayweather for taking such a mismatch on paper, hurting the sport and putting the integrity of boxing in jeopardy.
Instead of firing back at Hopkins, Mayweather extended an olive branch, saying all he wants to do is help the sport and grow the next generation of boxing champions.
“Bernard Hopkins, I just want to commend him for a great career,” Mayweather said. “Congratulations on a long, tremendous career. It’s all about the young champions that’s on the rise. You got so many young champions on the rise. If I can work with you guys in any way or lend a helping hand. It’s not hard to get in touch with me.”
Mayweather has taken numerous young fighters under his wing, most notably Gervonta Davis the IBF super featherweight champion at just 22 years old.
Mayweather is fighting McGregor on August 26 in a boxing fight at light middleweight on Showtime pay-per-view. Mayweather’s comments can be seen in the video at this link.
