Gegard Mousasi is preparing to face former UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman in a few months at UFC 210.
Mousasi, who currently lives in the Netherlands and holds a Dutch passport, but was born in Iran, thinks the Trump ban on people traveling from seven Muslim majority countries (of which Iran is one) over the next 90 days. Mousasi believes the ban may have an effect on his fight with Weidman this April.
“The rule is, even if you’re born in Iran, you’re a threat,” he told MMA DNA. “So I don’t know.”
The UFC, in a statement to MMA Junkie, says that they are closely monitoring the situation.
“There are numerous variables including a judicial injunction,” the statement reads. “We are monitoring and will be affirmatively engaged to ensure that our fighters and employees are able to go where they need to compete and do their jobs.”
Mousasi, fight with Weidman aside, thinks the 90 day Trump ban will be a negative for the United States and other countries affected by the ban.
“It’s going to ruin the relationship between countries,” he said of the immigration ban. “I think the U.S. is on a wrong path.”
UFC 210 takes place on Saturday, April 8 from the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York with Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson headlining.
