Georges St. Pierre Not Targeting McGregor Fight

Former UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre returns after a four-plus year absence at UFC 217 to challenge UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping for the gold.

Conor McGregor is the current UFC Lightweight Champion and GSP is saying that he isn’t targeting a fight with the Irishman at this time.

“I showed up at the fight because Lorenzo Ferttita asked me to come and show up because my agent was in negotiations with the UFC,” said St. Pierre to ESPN. “He wanted me to be there. I don’t know if he had something else behind his head, I was just there because of the meeting. I didn’t have any plan of doing anything towards Conor McGregor. We don’t compete in the same weight class.”

McGregor has fought at welterweight before at UFC 196 and UFC 202, but GSP has never competed at lightweight.

GSP does admit that McGregor is an excellent fight, but all his focus is on Michael Bisping at this time.

“He’s an amazing fighter, it would be an amazing honor, but I don’t know. I don’t know what to say. If the fans want it and he wants it maybe it will happen but right now, I’m focused on Bisping,” says St. Pierre.

UFC 217 takes place on Saturday, November 4 from Madison Square Garden in New York, New York with Michael Bisping and Georges St. Pierre headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
