Styles was a former Monday Night Raw and ECW play-by-play announcer Joey Styles was released from the WWE, although there's no solid timetable as to when it happened. Styles' last tweet before the release was July 29, not long after Styles held a Facebook Q&A in which he openly criticized aspects of the WWE. He also complimented Vince McMahon's eye for finding top stars and defended Roman Reigns' push.

“The bottom line is, if our chairman thinks he sees a future star as a babyface, that’s how things are going to play out. The answer is Vince thinks it can work. He’s been right much more than wrong over the course of the last 40 years. I’m sorry, but I’m not going to second-guess the chairman," Styles said.

He started wrestling announcing in 1992 and retired as a full-time announcer in 2008. Styles also worked for WWE.com for eight years, reaching the position of Vice President of Digital Media Content. Styles said in numerous interviews that he was happy with the job, and wasn't interested in commentating again.
