John Cena was recently a call-in guest on The Kyle and Jackie O Show out of Sydney, Australia, promoting his upcoming series of speaking engagements throughout The Land Down Under. He spoke about how busy he's been with his new acting career, and then the conversation shifted to American politics.
Abruptly.
The hosts were having a lighthearted discussion with Cena about his proposal to Nikki Bella in the ring at WrestleMania, about whether he was nervous she might say no, and then Jackie O dropped this grenade in Cena's lap.
"Now what do you think of Donald Trump? He's a WWE Hall of Famer, what do you think about him being the new president?"
And even though it's a radio interview, conducted over the phone, from thousands of miles away, you can literally SEE John Cena start to sweat. How to answer this question without alienating half of your audience or drawing the ire of your boss, who is a noted Trump supporter?
He starts stuttering and stammering and says (minus all the pauses and "umms" and "uhs"):
"That is a very, very difficult question. I think our country is at a point of expression and ... I think he's really finding his way. At times he's extremely abrasive. I know that's kind of his campaign but I think time will tell.
He's already locked up in some controversial business and it certainly doesn't speak proudly for America that the person who sits in the Oval Office is involved in controversy so that's never a good thing. But time will tell. A man's legacy is defined by time. No one pegged me to be where I was in the WWE after a few months. It took years for me to establish the fact that I was going to be where I was. So, we'll see. Time will tell."
Well, that's just about the most diplomatic way to handle that situation, Cena. Play your cards right and Trump might put you in charge of achieving Peace in the Middle East.
Anyway, the best part about this whole thing is that it's a wacky comedy radio show, so during the whole interview, while he's trying to make sure he doesn't say something that ends his career, Cena's entrance theme is playing underneath in the background, with that four note trumpet riff over and over and over again.
