UFC President Dana White made it clear that Conor McGregor must defend his UFC Featherweight Championship in his next fight or be forced to vacate it. José Aldo agrees with that sentiment.
Aldo, the UFC Interim Featherweight Champion, took to social media and called out McGregor to a fight at UFC 205.
McGregor spoke to the media after his UFC 202 victory against Nate Diaz about the possibility of fighting UFC Interim Featherweight Champion José Aldo to unify the belts.
"How long was I going back and forth with José? That must have been a two-year build-up," McGregor said. "He pulled out, last-minute. I continued to fight someone else, then we rescheduled a two-year, ‘round the world deal with that boy. And then he stepped in and I beat him in 13 seconds. It’s hard for me to get excited about that, especially after his last performance. It was a decision. He didn’t go out and get it like I wanted him to get it. So, I don’t know."
There is nothing set in stone for either McGregor and Aldo in terms of what each of their next fight could be. Aldo won the Interim Featherweight title at UFC 200 against Frankie Edgar. McGregor has not defended his title since beating Aldo to unify the Featherweight Championship last year at UFC 194.
UFC 205 will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 12.
