IBF Welterweight titleholder Kell "The Special One" Brook (36-0-0, 26 KO) is well aware just how tall of a task will be standing in front of him on September 10th. However his confidence has not been deterred by being matched with a daunting challenger in Kazakhstan's Gennady "GGG" Golovkin.
"GGG is the best fighter in the world," Brook admitted at the most recent press conference to promote his sold out fight with the Middleweight powerhouse, "and I am going to beat him".
A native of Sheffield, England, Brook will be coming up two weight classes from Welterweight, where he has been a dominant force for the last few years. The fight with Golovkin (35-0-0, 32 KO) will be contested all the way up at middleweight for his WBC, IBO, and IBF world titles.
"With me unbeaten and always finding a way, I'm not really in fear of his power" Brook told those in attendance. This is a similar sentiment that has been shared with all of Golovkin's previous victims, with the tune of most changing right after feeling the thudding power "GGG" carries in his fists.
Martin Murray, a fellow English native who was knocked out by the Kazakh star in 2015, provided a warning for Brook, claiming that "every shot Golovkin throw's kind of hurts you". With Brook's level of opposition having been questioned in the past, it will be interesting to see how Brook holds up once he feels the massive shots GGG will inevitably catch him with.
With Golovkin being unable to lure a top Middleweight into the ring with him, Brook has shown a lot of guts being willing to step up when nobody else would. "The Special One" is known for being a large Welterweight, so he foresees no issues with the weight disparity that has caused some to question just how competitive this fight will be.
Brook has a strong desire to cement his place alongside the greats of boxing history, and taking a giant risk against the top pound-for-pound fighter is the perfect route to obtain such notoriety. "I want to go down in history like Sugar Ray Robinson", Brook said, "doing massive things in big fights and beating the best".
Brook and Golovkin are set to fight September 10 from the 02 Arena in London, England on PPV.
