Earlier this January, 4 time world champion, most recently at Super Lightweight, Adrien "The Problem" Broner found himself in serious legal trouble after assaulting and robbing a man at gunpoint late one evening following a night of gambling at a bowling alley.
News broke today from TMZ Sports that the charges placed upon Broner have been completely dropped, as the main witness for the prosecution never arrived at the court hearing, causing the judge to refrain from prosecuting Broner any further.
Adrien Broner (32-2, 24 KO), residing from Cincinnati, OH, was at a bowling alley late one night in his hometown this past January, where recounted stories show a tale of "The Problem" losing a large sum of money throughout a night of high stakes bowling, at which point he waited for the victim outside of the alley and robbed him at gunpoint, also knocking him out cold before taking the man's belongings. Ironically calling himself "The Problem" well before this escapade, Broner just last month was released from a Hamilton County prison after a 30 day stint for being over 3 hours late to a scheduled court date back in July.
This is huge news for the champion, as his future in the boxing world was in complete limbo until this case had been settled. While Broner has been somewhat exposed as a over-hyped fighter in the past couple years, losing convincingly to Shawn Porter in 2015 and being bullrushed for 12 rounds by Marcos Maidana in 2013, he still brings the guarantee of a large payday, as his name recognition and ability to sell a fight with his mouth are something that both promoters and fans alike gravitate towards.
Broner said after his last fight that he would be returning to Welterweight, as Super LIghtweight was becoming entirely too difficult for him to achieve. This could potentially be great news for fans, as the Welterweight division is currently one of the most loaded in all of boxing, including the likes of title holders Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia, as well as Tim Bradley, Amir Khan, Shawn Porter, and Errol Spence Jr, along with a plethora of other talented, young fighters.
Whether you like him or not, Broner is an incredibly talented fighter and has the skill set to challenge anyone in the division, however he also seems to lack the mental toughness required to hang in a full 12 rounds with another top contender. Regardless, we should be seeing news on an upcoming title fight featuring "The Problem" in the very near future.
