UFC Austin will go down as one of the most action-packed events that the company has ever put on, and following after the spectacular UFC 275 card, us MMA fans have been treated thus far in June. UFC Austin saw a record-setting eight knockouts, six of which were in the first round. Truly spectacular stuff, and the highlights of all the action will follow after the break.
Josh Emmett def. Calvin Kattar via Split Decision (48-47, 48-47, 47-48)
Calvin Kattar and Josh Emmett fought a very well matched striking bout over 25 minutes that saw Emmett emerge with the split decision victory. Emmett came out throwing the heavier shots, and seemed to be the more aggressive and wild of the two, while Kattar was more measured and fighting behind his jab. Kattar's output wasn't what we've seen in the past from him, and while he cut Emmett fairly badly over his eye, Emmett's power punching approach won over the judges. Either man could've gotten the decision and it would've been justified. A good fight, that felt slightly underwhelming after the spectacular fights that had preceded it.
Kevin Holland def. Tim Means via Submission (D'Arce Choke) (Rd. 2 1:28)
Fighting in his hometown Kevin Holland landed all the heavier shots, and following a knockdown in the 2nd round found the finish with a very nice d'Arce Choke. Holland has now won two straight fights by stoppage after moving down to welterweight, and looks like he could be a contender in the division. Post-fight he called out Sean Brady in an attempt to get a top 10 opponent in his next outing.
Joaquin Buckley def. Albert Duraev via TKO (Doctor Stoppage) (Rd. 3 0:10)
Joaquin Buckley showcased why he's one of the most explosive and dynamic fighters in the UFC's middleweight division. He picked apart Albert Duraev specifically with his power right hand, which damaged Duraev's and seemed to fracture his orbital bone. The fight was called off between the second and third round, but credited as being 10 seconds into the third due to a clerical error from the always reliable Texas commission.
Damir Ismagulov def. Guram Kutateladze via Split Decision (30-27, 29-28, 28-29)
After a series of incredible quick finishes we got treated to a spectacular display of technique from both Damir Ismagulov and Guram Kutateladze. Both fighters showed off their skills, and each had their moments. This fight was incredibly high level, and is easily the leading contender for fight of the night.
Gregory Rodriguez def. Julian Marquez via KO (Punches) (Rd. 1 3:18)
This night of insane violence just rolls on as Gregory Rodriguez landed bomb after bomb on Julian Marquez and got yet another first-round stoppage on this card. Marquez showed incredible toughness to last even as long as he did, and was clearly out on his feet before Rodriguez scored the kill shot. Words can't express how good this card has been.
Adrian Yanez def. Tony Kelley via TKO (Punches) (Rd. 1 3:49)
Adrian Yanez put on a wonderful performance by putting a whooping on Tony Kelley and getting a stoppage in the first round. There had been bad blood leading up to the fight, and Yanez took his anger out on Kelley and helped karma do its work. Yanez has now won his first five UFC fights, and is just another name added to the ridiculously stacked bantamweight division.
Natalia Silva def. Jasmine Jasudavicius via Unanimous Decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27)
In a very impressive debut performance, Natalia Silva put the flyweight division on notice by piecing up Jasmine Jasudavicius over three rounds. Silva fought brilliantly off her back foot, showing off impressive footwork and balance to shed the attempted takedowns from Jasudavicius. Given she went on to hit some nice reactive takedowns, and has a reputation for her jiu-jitsu she could be a name to watch going forward.
Jeremiah Wells def. Court McGee via KO (Punches) (Rd. 1 1:34)
The action rolls on as Jeremiah Wells put Court McGee to sleep with a massive left hook and brutal follow-up shots. Wells has now won all three of his UFC bouts by stoppage, and is a serious name to watch at welterweight.
Ricardo Ramos def. Danny Chavez via KO (Spinning Elbow) (Rd. 1 1:12)
There have only been five spinning elbow knockouts in UFC history, and Ricardo Ramos now has two of them, as he put Danny Chavez out with a pin-point strike right to Chavez' chin. Ramos' accuracy with his spinning attacks is absolutely incredible. This card has been incredible.
Maria Oliveira def. Gloria de Paula via Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)
In a sloppy, but all-action fight Maria Oliveira edged out a split decision over Gloria De Paula. Oliveira was aggressive and throwing heavy wild shots the entire fight, while De Paula was more measured, and landed at a much higher percentage. It was a close fight, but I would've landed the other way on the decision.
Cody Stamann def. Eddie Wineland via TKO (Punches) (Rd. 1 0:59)
In the third straight fight there was only one fighter in the cage, as Cody Stamann blew out Eddie Wineland in under a minute. Wineland's chin seems entirely gone, as the first heavy blow Stamann landed dropped and hurt Wineland. This should be the end for the one time WEC champion.
Phil Hawes def. Deron Winn via TKO (Punches and Elbows) (Rd. 2 4:45)
In a complete destruction, Phil Hawes wiped the canvas with Deron Winn. Winn is just simply too small to compete at middleweight at 5'6" and Hawes was able to use him like target practice. He hit him with knees, head kicks, lead elbows, and a variety of punches. This fight was just one way traffic, until Herb Dean was forced to step in just before the end of the 2nd round. As one-sided a fight as you'll see in the UFC.
Roman Dolidze def. Kyle Daukaus via TKO (Knee and Punches) (Rd. 1 1:13)
Roman Dolidze blew the doors off Kyle Daukaus to lead off the night, landing a series of heavy blows including a brutal standing knee in the clinch to get the knockout in just over a minute. A hell of a way to start the card.
