Showtime is no stranger to making major boxing cards on television, but now they will be tasked to not only broadcast Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury as a pay-per-view event on December 1, but also have a Showtime Championship Boxing card on that same night.
It was previously announced that Showtime would handle pay-per-view broadcast duties for the WBC heavyweight title bout between Wilder and Fury, but now the network has also added another fight card to its schedule. That fight card is a December 1 event in Quebec, Canada headlined by the WBC light heavyweight title fight between Adonis Stevenson and Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
In order to avoid both cards running at the same time, the Stevenson vs. Gvozdyk card will start much soon than Showtime's typical big boxing cards. The telecast will start at 7 p.m. ET with the world title fight taking place at 8 p.m. ET. The change in start time is to accommodate the start time for the Wilder vs. Fury fight, scheduled for 9 p.m. ET.
Several months ago, Gvozdyk was ordered by the WBC to fight for an interim title in March against Mehdi Amar with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger to the winner of Stevenson’s last defense Badou Jack. Gvozdyk handily beat Amar at Madison Square Garden on ESPN while Stevenson retained his title with a majority draw against Jack.
The pay-per-view card Showtime will be handling will see Fury challenge for the one world heavyweight title in the WBC belt currently being held by Wilder. The pay-per-view card is rumored to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
