Alexander Volkanovski solidifies his status as the top contender in the featherweight division.
"The Hulk" walked into Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and out-paced "The King of Rio" Jose Aldo, picking up a unanimous decision (30-27 x 3) victory. The 15-minute fight was contested exclusively on the feet with Volkanovski landing the cleaner strikes throughout. Activity on the feet fueled Volkanovski's victory as he kept the pace up and didn't let Aldo settle into his usual rhythm, using his size and strength to press Aldo against the cage to slow any momentum.
After the bout, Volkanovski called for his shot at the UFC Featherweight Title. Volkanovski is now 20-1 in his MMA career, winning seven straight inside the Octagon. Along with Saturday's decision victory over Aldo, Volkanovski has a TKO over former title challenger Chad Mendes. He was ranked fourth in the official UFC rankings coming into the fight. Aldo was first.
Max Holloway is the current UFC Featherweight Champion.
