BBBofC Gives Update On Various British Titles; Hughie Fury Vacates Title

The British Boxing Board of Control has released an update on several of its title situations, including its heavyweight champion relinquishing his belt.

Hughie Fury, the British heavyweight champion and former world title challenger, has vacated his title due to injury. Fury has not fought since losing an IBF heavyweight title eliminator against Kubrat Pulev last October in Bulgaria.

The 24-year-old Fury, who is related to current lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, won the British title in May 2018 when he stopped Sam Sexton in the fifth round, but has yet to defend the title once. As for the fate of the championship, the BBBofC announced that it will make a decision on the matter on a later date.

In other British championship news, junior middleweight titleholder Ted Cheeseman and Anthony Fowler have been ordered to fight with a purse bid date of April 10 being set if the two sides don't come to an agreement. The fight was also ordered to take place before the end of July 2019.

But the junior middleweight title isn't the only one that will have an ordered fight go to purse bids as the featherweight champion Ryan Walsh and Jordan Gill have their purse bid also set for April 10. Like with Cheeseman vs. Fowler, the fight must also take place before the end of July.

As for the welterweight title currently being held by Chris Jenkins, the BBBofC said his fight against Liam Taylor will take place on a boxing card promoted by Frank Warren in May. Although not yet fully announced, Warren did announce that Billy Joe Saunders' fight against Shefat Isufi will take place sometime in May at a venue yet to be announced.

Lastly, flyweight champion Andrew Selby was ordered to fight Jay Harris and the fight was nearing a purse bid. The BBBofC ruled that the purse bid has been delayed with no announced date for the new bid if it ever gets rescheduled.
