Ben Askren Would Need Tyron Woodley’s Blessing Before Accepting A Title Shot

Ben Askren made his UFC debut last weekend at UFC 235, defeating former UFC Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler by first round submission.

That win would make Askren a contender in the welterweight division, but he will need the blessing from former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley before accepting a title shot.

“Yeah, I would consult Tyron first,” Askren said on The MMA Hour. “But as long as he kind of gave his blessing, yeah. Of course.”

Woodley also competed on the UFC 235 card, losing the welterweight title to Kamaru Usman via unanimous decision in the co-main event of the evening.

Askren may be focused more on the main event of UFC Fight Night London than a title shot at the moment.

“I think it’s a good fight,” Askren said. “I think Masvidal has the ability to beat Darren Till, but the best version of Jorge Masvidal doesn’t always show up. If the best version of Jorge Masvidal shows up, I think he’s got a decent chance of winning. But I think it’s more likely that Darren Till wins.”

Darren Till and Jorge Masvidal are competing in the main event of UFC Fight Night London, which is scheduled for March 16.
