After Gennady Golovkin's win against Kell Brook on September 10, there had been talks of a possible GGG vs. Billy Joe Saunders fight soon. Saunders has confirmed as much, and said he is ready to fight Golovkin.
Golovkin said after his win against Brook that his goal is to unify all the titles in the middleweight division, which includes getting Daniel Jacobs' WBA (Regular) Middleweight title and Saunders' WBO Middleweight title. Saunders said that he is giving Golovkin a chance at his title.
“It’s time to test myself and see what I am made of," Saunders recently told Boxing News. "Everyone’s raving on about him but to be honest with you I took a lot of confidence from the weekend. I’m not a blown up welterweight, I’m a full fledged middleweight. He keeps banging on he wants a chance at the belt. Now I’m going to give him a chance. I’m ready to fight. I’m ready to fight him wherever he wants. I don’t care if he comes to England, America, I don’t care if it’s in a field, I’ll fight him anywhere he wants.”
An issue with scheduling a Golovkin vs. Saunders fight is the fact that Saunders is scheduled to fight on October 29 in Manchester, England. He has yet to have an opponent officially announced, and Golovkin is likely going to face off against Jacobs after the WBA recently ordered the two fighters fight each other within the next few months. Saunders said that he has no problem fighting Golovkin shortly after his October 29 fight.
“I’m fighting October 29," Saunders said. "Give me a week off and I’ll fight him straight after that, don’t bother me. I’ll fight him any day. Just shake a bit of ring rust off against a good, durable contender, because at this level there are no opponents, they’re all contenders, they’re all coming to win. As long as I can shake that little bit of ring rust off, all I need is one fight and I’m ready to go.”
Only Jacobs and Saunders hold world titles at middleweight. Golovkin is the unified WBA (Super), WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight champion.
