Callum Smith To Defend WBA Super Middleweight Title On Joshua vs. Ruiz Undercard

Callum Smith's first world title defense will take place at Madison Square Garden.

Matchroom Boxing announced that Smith, the current the WBA "Super" champion at 168 pounds, will face Hassan N'Dam on June 1. The fight will be part of the DAZN broadcast for the Madison Square Garden card headlined by Anthony Joshua's unified heavyweight title defense against Andy Ruiz Jr.

Smith became the WBA champion when he scored a seventh-round knockout win over George Groves in the World Boxing Super Series finals in Saudi Arabia last year. The 29-year-old Smith, who has won all 25 of his pro bouts, also holds the WBC Diamond and Ring Magazine titles at 168 pounds.

N'Dam will be moving up in weight for this fight after competing at middleweight for a good portion of the last decade, challenging for the IBF and WBO world titles during that span. N'Dam once held the WBA "Regular" middleweight title but lost the belt in his first title defense in a rematch against Ryota Murata back in 2017. After the loss to Murata, N'Dam bounced back with a majority decision win over Martin Murray last December.

This is now the third world title fight (and fifth overall title bout) that has been added to the June 1 show. Aside from the main event, there is also a fight between Katie Taylor and Delfine Persoon to crown the first-ever undisputed women's lightweight champion with the WBA, WBO, WBC, IBF and Ring Magazine titles on the line. Also on the card is a welterweight fight between Josh Kelly and Ray Robinson as well as a junior welterweight bout between Chris Algieri vs. Tommy Coyle.

Fightful will have live coverage of the entire card from Madison Square Garden.
