Carlos Cuadras Completes Rehab, Wants To Become World Champion

Carlos Cuadras, with the support of the WBC, has been able to enter rehab for his drug problems and is now ready to get back in the ring.

Cuadras spoke with ESPN Deportes and said rehabilitation went well and explained what started his depression. The former world champion said it began when he lost his most recent fight against McWilliams Arroyo on the "Superfly 2" undercard back in February and started drinking and taking recreational drugs.

"After my last fight, my depression began, I felt sad and defeated. I flew off the handle, started drinking and now I'm using banned substances, but now I got myself to check into rehabilitation for taking cocaine and alcohol," Cuadras said.

It wasn't until late April when WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said in April Cuadras would then be temporarily suspended for a potential violation of the WBC's Clean Boxing Program and that he would check into a rehabilitation center. The 29-year-old Cuadras said he's ready to come back and fight for a world title and even contemplated fighting as a bantamweight.

"I think all of this came at the right time and now I want to come back and be world champion again. If they offer me something for 'Superfly' and I can make weight, I'll do it, but if not, I want to start my campaign as a bantamweight," Cuadras said.

Cuadras' last two fights were defeats against Juan Francisco Estrada and Arroyo, both of which were televised on the two "Superfly" boxing cards HBO did last September and February. A third "Superfly" card happening later this year is currently being discussed.
