UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones was arrested this past week, being charged with aggravated DWI, negligent use of a firearm, possession of an open container, and driving with no proof of insurance.
Former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen has seen the video of Jones being arrested and he believes that police embarrassed Jones during the whole altercation.
“I don’t want to get into the legal stuff on this, but they kind of embarrassed him a little bit,” Sonnen told Aaron Bronsteter of TSN (via Milan Ordonez of Bloody Elbow). “There might be reasons why you have to do that, I’m not weighing in too much. But they asked him straight up, ‘Have you been drinking?’ And he responded, ‘Yes.’ It seemed like the next 13 minutes was kind of humiliating the guy who already copped to it. I realize that that’s not wonderful, this is a bad thing that he’s going through. But my sense of it was Jon told the truth three seconds in. What are we doing here? In Jon’s defense - no matter how limited - they asked Jon a question, and Jon told the truth. Take that however you will, but that’s how it happened.”
Jones has yet to comment on his arrest, which is just the latest in a string of legal issues the fighter has been through over the years.
Sonnen believes there is gonna be a fallout due to the latest arrest, but he doesn’t know what that fallout is going to be.
“I can only tell you history. Just using history as the greatest trajectory for the future,” he said. “Dana White will always let those things play out. If there’s some kind of authority over you, in this case law enforcement, that plays out in the decision comes in. So yeah, I think there’s gonna be a little fallout there. But, I think that due process will play out first.”
The two did do battle in the UFC, with Jones scoring a first round TKO win over Sonnen at UFC 159.
