No criminal charges will be filed after a fight that went viral in Oklahoma involving OU football player Spencer Jones and MMA practitioners Walker and Braden Brown.
The video, which reached a massive 8.6million views, showed Jones and another man push Walker Brown and looked to have busted his nose. Brown and his brother Braden then fought back, slamming Jones and the other man to the ground and punching them repeatedly.
Jones attorney Woodrow Glass said the football player nearly lost his left eye after his orbital bone was shattered in the brawl, and required a four-hour corrective surgery. Walker Brown said he tore his bicep and recently underwent surgery. The Norman Police Department made the following statement in a press release.
The Norman Police Department received a report of an assault that occurred inside an establishment in the 700 block of Asp Avenue on February 13 at approximately 11:45 p.m. The report was made to NPD on February 16. Investigators identified and interviewed all involved parties. The completed investigation to the incident was provided to the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office on March 9.
Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn reviewed the thorough investigation completed by NPD including investigative reports, videos, witness statements and other documents provided by the investigators. District Attorney Mashburn made the following determination on the case.
“We have carefully considered the entirety of the circumstances surrounding the incident including a previous altercation between the parties and the actions that led up to the physical fight caught on camera by a bystander,” said District Attorney Mashburn. “My office has decided that no criminal charges are appropriate as this appears to be a mutual combat situation in which both parties voluntarily engaged in a fist fight.”
Steve Stice, the attorney for Walker Brown made the following statement on their GoFundMe page, which was set up to help pay for the medical and legal ramifications from the video.
"We have received confirmation from Greg Mashburn, Cleveland County District Attorney, that his office has declined to file any criminal charges against my client stemming from the events of February 13, 20201. We appreciate the thorough investigation conducted by Norman Police Detectives Brett Willer and Brian Franks. Despite attempts to convey alternative narratives by others, these Detectives remained vigilant in seeking out the truth about this incident.
Walker's bicep surgery was successful and he is recovering well. He again would like to convey his appreciation for all of the support he has received as a result of this situation. He remains overwhelmed by the encouragement he has received from friends and strangers through calls, texts and internet posts.
Although this closes the chapter on this incident as far as criminal liability, we are waiting to see if any civil lawsuits are filed. This being said, Walker will be unable to comment on the events of that evening until we know whether there will be future litigation.
